Hotels Tonight

Our trip to California is less than a week away and I’ve started to get indecisive. I have a tendency to second guess the hotel I picked because I always think I can find something better. Luckily Travelocity has a feature where you can book the room online and pay at the hotel. This allows me the flexibility to change my reservation up until the day of the trip. This is perfect for me because I’m constantly reworking numbers and trying to save a couple dollars here and there.

Today I realized I haven’t talked about one of my favorite apps for changing your mind last minute. It’s called Hotels Tonight. Like the name states it can help you find a hotel that very night, but you can also book up to 100 days in advance and for up to 14 consecutive days.

Hotels Tonight is a great way to take advantage of last minute deals! When hotels have extra rooms that they just want filled, they put up deals on apps like Hotels Tonight at a huge discount!

I did a quick search this morning to see if I could find a better deal than what we already have and I found some decent options. Their “Hot Deal” of the day is the Crowne Plaza in Los Angeles. This is a 3 star hotel that normally books for $212, but they are booking for $108 on Hotels Tonight during the week we are in California. That’s $104 a NIGHT in savings!

The last time we used this app was back in March when we took a spur of the moment road trip to Florida. On our way back we decided to stop in Washington DC. We didn’t have any hotel booked so,while Chris was driving, I opened the app up poked around.

I knew from previous experience that it’s very expensive to stay in Washington DC on a weekday (because the hotels are being booked by politicians who work in the area), but I hoped it might be a little more affordable since we were staying on a weekend.

We ended up looking into a place called The Wharf. Very upscale hotel, rated 4 stars. It wasn’t a place I ever dreamed we could afford. I figured we would still be paying an arm and a leg, because it was such a nice place. The rooms are listed on the website for $348 a night, which totally blew our budget out of the water. Travelocity was offering deals for $297 a night, which was still outrageous. Hotels Tonight had them listed for $170 a night!

Now typically we would be looking for something closer to $100-$120 a night, but we decided to splurge because the deal was unbelievable and it was our last night on vacation. That was our first time staying in a 4 star hotel and we were totally spoiled by it. We now call ourselves “Hotel Snobs” because we are always trying to book the nicest hotel in budget. But the cool thing is, we can afford to be this way now because Hotels Tonight has amazing deals like this all the time.

  1. That sounds like an awesome app, I’ll have to check it out!

Have you ever been to a place where it’s better to arrive and search rather than book before hand? I’m traveling to the Carribean later this year and was told that that it might be worth trying in that area. But I’m skeptical, ya know?

    1. I am a big fan of arriving and searching because you never know what kind of discount you can find.

I have only used the app in the United States so far, but it does work internationally! I would suggest searching the area your staying in on Hotels Tonight and comparing the prices to other booking sites. I know the deals get better the closer to the dates you get, because hotels get more desperate to fill the rooms, so if you pick out a couple of hotels you like ahead of time it might be worth it to arrive and search. They also have something called a Geo Rate that I forgot to mention in the post, but if you are physically near the location you can sometimes get and even BETTER rate.

Hope you can find a great deal for your trip! Happy travels! 🙂
