Day 3: San Diego Zoo

On Tuesday we drove on down to San Diego. It was on this drive that we both declared we will not be moving to California any time soon. We were not prepared to navigate the 4-6 lane highways and it proved to take some time to get used to. We basically needed to be paying attention to the GPS at all times to stay on course.

The day at the zoo went really well though. The weather had predicted it to not to go above 63 degrees Fahrenheit(17.2 Celsius), it made it up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 Celsius), which made for perfect zoo weather. The $56 admission fee seemed a little steep, but it’s a famous zoo and I wanted to visit it because they have some animals we don’t have at our local zoos. They also ended up having some fantastic exhibits where you could get really close to the animals. I got some great pictures(you can check them out on Instagram @welivefortheadventure.

They have a panda that lives at the zoo. She was napping when we visited her, but it was really cool to see one in person. They have a little walk through where koalas are hanging out in the trees on either side of you. The exhibits for the elephants and the giraffes brought you so close to them that I felt like I could’ve reached out and touched them. At the tiger exhibit we saw him walk right up against the glass in front of us. The zoo really did a good jobs of getting you up close to the exhibits.

The zoo is set up in a way where you can almost pick and choose what you walk to go see. There are a bunch of different pathways and you can skip over a couple if it’s not an animal your dying to see.

This zoo is seriously huge so there is still plenty to see if you skip a few things. In fact, our phones tracked over 9000 steps in the 4 hour period we were there. One thing I will recommend however, is heading to the right when you initially come through the entrance. We made the mistake of doing the opposite when we visited and at the end there was a very steep, long walk up hill to the final exhibits. If we had gone to the right at the beginning, this would have been a downhill stroll making for a much more enjoyable pace.

All in all we had a great time checking out the zoo. And because the exhibits were so close, I got some great pictures to hold on to as a reminder of our trip there. Pictures are the best sovereigns I can think of, and you don’t have to worry about them fitting in your suitcase on the way home.

What’s your favorite zoo you been to? What made that experience memorable for you?

Your money will return, your time won’t.
